5 Essentials of Postcard Marketing

Posted in Marketplace Channel on October 27, 2011 by Event City Online

What are the 5 Essentials of Postcard Marketing?

Back in 2008-2009 when Event City knew it would be launching within a few years they created a Post Card to compliment their Beta Test. They did a co-promotion with the PR Team at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas. 4 Days and about 4000 postcards later the unique visits to their website skyrocketed. There were over Five Thousand Clicks and within the next two weeks, another 7000 visitors popped in to see what this unique Portal was Beta Testing.

Suffice it to say, Postcard marketing is just about the most cost effective form of direct advertising, for both on line and bricks and mortar businesses. However, it can easily turn into a failed project if the following essentials are ignored.

1- Understand your target market’s profile.

Without understanding your target market you may end up wasting a lot of money, purchasing a mailing list that will simply not deliver any results. Depending on your target market, you should also consider the possibility of not buying a list but instead have the post office deliver to every address in particular zip codes, saving a lot of money in purchasing a list, addressing and sorting fees.

2- Use a high impact message.

It is very easy to get caught up in covering too many offers in a post card, which dilutes the message. Use a single appearing, irresistible offer and state it clearly and boldly in as few words as possible. General “we are here” and “We sell widgets” will never work. Special offers and coupons do.

3- Use a high impact design.

Avoid designing a cluttered postcard. Your design should be as bold and focused as your message. Hiring a professional graphic designer could payoff in a big way. Postcard printing is inexpensive enough these days to justify testing a few designs, as the cost of mailing is many times that of printing.

4- Test, monitor, and test again.

Make the offer subject to the client bringing in the postcard to qualify. With this, you can monitor results effectively.

Don’t expect the campaign to hit a home run and put all your resources into a huge distribution. Do test runs. Test for the effectiveness of the list, the design and the offer. Even when you get to a point where you consider the last camping a home run, don’t stop testing other alternatives. Monitor results carefully and keep notes.

5- Do it over and over, and over again.

Post card marketing or any kind of direct marketing for that matter depends on repetition. If you plan your testing carefully, you will end up with the most effective combination of message, offer and design and that message must be repeated over and over to become even more effective.

Welcome to MacWorld, Happy Birthday iPad

Posted in Marketplace Channel on January 27, 2011 by Event City Online

WHAT’S THE BIG I-dea?

Welcome to the world of Macintosh! Do any of you remember that old adage from the early Macintosh computer advertisements? Well at this years MacWorld Expo it might as well be the I World. I for iPod, iPhone, and now the iPad, the newest “I” family member and the first tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. It was announced a year ago to date, January 27, 2010 (Happy b-day iPad), it is part of a device category between a smartphone and a laptop computer.

Ok, so here we are, at a convention that is talking about a year old device like it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Maybe it’s taken the iPad a full year to slice itself into a plethora of markets (or maybe that is why Apple is here talking it up so greatly). The success of the iPad is mixed, depending on who you ask.  Everyone I spoke with who has paid these prices $499 to $829 (according to the Apple Store) loves what the iPad does and how it does it. I’m not convinced, or was I impressed while an Apple store assistant walked me through a few of the features while waiting for my laptop appointment. I am just not convinced that one should pay between $500 and $900 dollars for this device, why?

On that note, let me grab my bags, my pens, biz cards, recorder, microphone, video cam, and my HTC EVO (sorry iPhone), and be on my way to hang out with 25,000 other MacHeads all cramming into the Moscone Center, San Francisco, to view the 300 products presented there until Sunday. Stay tuned, I hope to bring back something more iFriendly.

The Consumer Electronic Show came and went like a cool breeze on a warm summer’s night. Here was the Event City Creative Magazine, at one of the largest electronic shows in the world with only 72 hours to see over 80,000 products – Yeah Right!! As my 10 year old and his friends would say, EPIC FAIL!! I’ve always maintained this should be a week long show, what better reason to stay in Las Vegas for a few extra days.

So what did we find at this ultimate Electronic Industry’s playground?

iGrill, first ever Bluetooth enabled grilling/cooking thermometer and App

I’ve recently had the chance to speak with some of my Catering friends, food people at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco (what a great partner this product would make with some of those awesome BBQ Sauces we sampled), and lots of Grilling fanatics about a new device, and they all asked the same questions – What is it? What does it do?

Here’s the overall idea: iGrill is an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch-friendly cooking and grilling thermometer that runs off of 4 AA batteries and provides a  temperature readout in digital format on its own screen. It does not need an electronic device to use. It uses a long-range (200-foot) transmitter using Bluetooth technology to communicate with a free iGrill application. Ok, that’s pretty simple, right? Good. Are you sitting down? Here it where it goes way beyond the “out of the box” of any typical digital cooking thermometer. The iGrill offers both digital and analog readouts, a timer, guidelines for cooking different types of meat that can show you the progress for whatever you’re cooking, and even integrated recipes. iGrill also has the ability to optionally connect with two metal probes — one’s included in the package — and works at temperatures of up to 400 degrees. White or black versions are available, they come with a built-in stand, a wrap-around thermometer cable, and a nice glow-through front face.

Sure you have to ask yourself the question is it certainly worth the $100 you’ll spend for this functionality? Well that is entirely up to you, but we are certainly intrigued enough (and we hope you are too) that we’ll be looking forward to doing our review on this newest gadget for the fine professional food service company, to the grilling enthusiast. Of course I will most certainly look forward to anticipating the outcome of our grilling experience. Gotta run, I have some decisions to make- Chicken, T-bones, Mahi Mahi, oh my….

Eye-Fi Memory Card Does Work For You

The Eye-Fi card is the 1st wireless memory card. It looks, stores media, and fits into cameras just like a regular SDHC card. But this card is special. The Eye-Fi card has built-in Wi-Fi that uses your existing wireless network to effortlessly transfer photos and videos to wherever you desire.

This is not the first time Event City Magazine seen this, and it certainly will not be the last. A very promising device, we are looking forward to doing a thorough review on this unit and all of the features it has to offer.

Visit the Eye-Fi Website for the latest information on this product.

Everyday theft of some type of electronic mobile device is not an uncommon occurrence, especially with the rising prevalence of expensive gadgets in the general populace. Not to mention all the information we store on our smartphones and laptops these days, including confidential business and personal documents, company e-mail, personal finance apps, so much private information its even more important to protect your device from loathsome characters.

Ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you to my new best friend, GadgetTrak Mobile Security, which is now launching in version 3 just in time for CES 2011. Along with its companion apps, this handy service provides comprehensive protection for laptops, smartphones, and tablets in the event they’re lost or stolen.

GadgetTrak consists of five major features to help you protect your data and find your device. For one, you can remotely wipe any personal data, including photo, e-mail, contacts, and texts. You can also back up any of this data using government-grade encryption, which is a nice feature for those who don’t want to lose all the data in a wipe. The software is also tamper proof, so once it has been activated, no settings can be changed; the service will even notify you if the thief removes the SIM card.

GadgetTrak uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, and cell tower positioning to help you find your missing device. There’s an alarm functionality, which lets you trigger a loud siren, which can serve as a theft deterrent or a location aid, even if the phone is set to silent.

GadgetTrak Mobile Security 3 is available for $34.95 per year for laptops and non-iOS smartphones and tablets. A one-time 99-cent download from iTunes is all it takes for iOS users to enjoy the service. In my humble iPinion, that is certainly a small price to pay for your peace of mind.

An Open Proposal to Service our Ecommerce Needs

Posted in Marketplace Channel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 15, 2010 by Event City Online

TO: All Ecommerce Solution Providers interest in doing business with the Event City Emporium

Thank you for your interest and commitment to what you do, it is very impressive. Just the fact that you have arrived here says a lot. We have chosen to go this route because we are at a point where we have a couple of different companies courting us, and we need to make a decision as quickly as possible. So we are moving forward in this fashion in the hopes that we might generate interest from that one company that is a perfect fit for our needs and their services.

As you may know we have been go go go, from CES in Vegas to MacWorld in SF- it’s been non stop. First chance to get back and create this proposal, even though we might have previously spoken or not, I want to share with you our vision and the direction we want to head in as far as our eCommerce Channel is concerned.

Event City Network is an Online Portal for the Events & Creative Industries and all their vertical markets. We have been doing R&D and beta testing for over 10 years (Yes, we were very much ahead of our time). We know our audience inside out – better than most. What they like to eat, where they like to go, what kind of cars they drive, what colors turn them on, where they shop, but most importantly, what they want to achieve from their Internet/Web relationship and usage. We know what side of the screen they prefer to rest their mouse pointer on, and how they prefer to get their new business; and we know this broken up into the different segments of our top 10 industries (see our BlogaZine for more details). So we are ready to meet them head on!

We are looking for a company that can provide us with excellent eCommerce services to match our needs. So what does that mean to us?

First and foremost, a company that can be a “partner”, a collaborator for the sales of our products- both on and offline, both physical products, services, and media content (software, video, photography, documents, etc.) as well. A delivery system that will make it simple for us to sell all of these types of products. Basically we want to be able to sell anything to anybody and not hit any brickwall – adaptation is ok, a brickwall is someone telling us, “Oh, sorry our system can’t hand that”.

Additionally, and just as important as our eCom platform, is a Partner relationship to assist us in creating a system that can white label a reseller/affiliate program that we can offer to our members. During our Beta Testing we realized we had a very diverse audience, but they all work together towards common goals. The products and services used in accomplishing those goals were our first “no-brainer” products. From cool invitations to massive decorations. Fog machines, Snow makers and Confetti launchers. Food & Beverage items, production expendables, costumes & wardrobing, decor & ambiance, floral, balloons, lighting, sound, audio visual, printing, t-shirts, electronic goods, and more.

Many of our members will want their own websites and eCommerce solutions. We want to be there to provide that for them – through you, one of our potential partners. We even have some companies that currently need to implement a solution now. We are talking about our customers that will see who we are, what we have developed and want us to provide them with the same or similar. We share that customer with you, they receive incredible services, state of the art services and we share in the revenues – a win win for everyone.

As far as the science of Search Engine stuff goes, it’s important but not necessary (especially if there is a cost associated with this) as we have some team members trained and successful in this science. But never-the-less, we will want to offer your services in this capacity to our Member/Customers as well, but may not necessarily need you to help us – this could be determined at a later date.

Don’t get me wrong, SEM is important for us, but we know our audience better than most, and especially better than any Search Engine “*” company, no offense, but without knowledge of who are audience is, what they want, how they think, etc. any SEO/SEM or whatever company is almost useless, except for the implementation of some type of technology – its kind of like me handing someone the keys to a Lamborghini who never learned how to drive. It’s a cool car, but useless to them because they don’t know how to operate it. But then, this is why we want to Collaborate with a company that has good solutions for eCommerce and SEM/SEO, etc.; we can work with you to bring our customers solutions in their industries.

The way we see it, on the web Time is of the Essence more than ever- when we actually get to a nanosecond of a potential customer, we literally have seconds to grab them and hopefully, in those few seconds convince them we are the company to “click on”. So where does that leave us? Well, with all new parameters- as writers, marketing managers, individual users, copywriters, editors, it is imperative that we get to the point, quickly and concisely. Our elevator pitches just went up 10 notches; its more like the “speed of light pitch”!

Years ago when I was in high school I had a good friend, Andy Araica, him and I started a fun production company, we called it Non-Hype Productions. Andy & I like doing things involving events, film and something new called “Video”. But he was pretty concise and to the point- scared a lot of people, especially back then. That term comes back to haunt me now almost 30 years later. We need to present ourselves without any HYPE, advertise with Non-Hype. The ability for any of us marketing and promoting companies online to keep our communications clear will be rewarded greatly, and as a company that is how we see it.

There are many different features and benefits that we would of course want to implement over time, but realistically, we know all of that will come in time, and as long as we can keep an open source environment and/or a good back-end management of our content and data we can pretty much use any company with a decent eCommerce platform.

The key for us is finding a partnership relationship with a company that wants to reach our audience and believes in growth. We want to generate more revenue than just selling a bunch of products, we are looking at the BIG picture! We have a large B2B audience that grows bigger everyday. They are, for the most part, very non-technical and prefer to bring in companies like ours and yours to help them with their Internet Business Solutions. We want to be there for them, but need YOU to help us do that.

Let me know if this proposal is of interest to you.

Warm Regards,
Nolan Apostle
